Valentine’s Day Culture Point

Did you know that on Valentine’s Day in Western societies both men and women give gifts to their sweethearts?  (We don’t have White Day in March, and we also don’t generally give valentines to our coworkers, just our romantic partners.) 　 

バレンタインデーに西洋の国では男性も女性もカードやプレゼントを恋人やパートナーにあげる事を知っていますか？（三月にホワイトデーと言う日がなくて、義理チョコはあげず、恋人やパートナーだけにあげます。）

A “valentine” is a person, who agrees to be your sweetheart on Valentine’s day (and hopefully they will be your sweetheart longer than just one day!) We give that person a Valentine’s card, which asks them, “Will you be my Valentine?” and confesses new love or reiterates our continued love for our partners.

「バレンタイン」とは２月１４日の大切な人と言う意味です。

(うまく行けば、そのバレンタインが一日以上の恋人になります！)

その相手に「私のバレンタインになってくれる？」と書いたカードをあげて、新しい恋人に告白したり、パートナーへの愛を再確認したりします。

The Valentine card is often accompanied by a gift such as flowers, chocolate, candy, teddy bears, balloons, or even expensive gifts like jewelry (for that oh so special someone!). If we are in a relationship, then we usually go out on a date with our partner on the evening of Valentine’s Day.

 そのカードと花、チョコレート、キャンディ、テディベアー、風船等のプレゼントを一緒にあげます（すごく特別な恋人にはアクセサリー等の高価な物をあげる事もあります！）。相手がいる場合、普通はバレンタインデーの夜に一緒に出かけます。

Valentine Sweets Lesson

Are you interested in cooking and American culture? I would like to invite you to make Valentine sweets with me on Saturday, February 11th at my home in Ayase, Adachi-ku. (I will send the address and map to participating individuals later.)
アメリカの文化と料理に興味がありますか？ 　一緒に バレンタインのお菓子を作るために足立区綾瀬の私の家に2月11日（土）に皆さんを招待します。（参加者に住所と地図を後で送ります。）

We will make sweets like chocolate walnut fudge, strawberry pie, and pound cake served with raspberries and whipped cream. This will take a long time to make (about 3 hours total), so I am thinking the time will be from 2p.m. until 5p.m., but you can stay a little later for chatting in English and eating some sweets together after we cook.
チョコレートくるみファッジ 、苺パイ、パウンドケーキ(ラズベリーソースとホイップクリーム添え)等を作ります。これは時間がかかるので（全部で3時間ぐらい）、時間は午後2時から5時までと考えています。でも、お菓子を作った後で、ちょっと食べながら英会話ができるので、5時を過ぎてもいられます。

Also, participation will be free for first-time cooking students. Continuing students please pay a fee of 3500 yen.  I will not charge any extra money for the food or materials.
また、 クッキングレッスンが 初めの生徒は参加が無料です。2回名以降の生徒は３５００円の料金をいただきます。料理にかかる費用を含みます。レッスン後に日本語の簡単なアンケートを書いて頂きます。

5 people (+ me) is a good number for my dining/kitchen, so please reserve with me as soon as possible (at the latest by Thursday, February 9th)!  It will be first come, first serve.     私のキッチン／ダイニングで私を含めて6人が適当な人数なので、早く予約して下さい（遅くとも2月9日（木）までに）！これと決めたら早い者勝ち!
